As we welcome the Spring of 2024, we also welcome the upcoming edition of Streets For Kids, a campaign that aims to transform the streets around our schools into safer, cleaner, and more active spaces. From 20th April to 26th May 2024, parents, teachers, and children across European cities are being mobilized to advocate for more School Streets.
School Streets are areas around schools where the priority is given to walking and cycling over motor vehicles during drop-off and pick-up times. This simple yet effective initiative has the potential to significantly improve road safety, air quality, and promote active travel among our children.
The concept of School Streets is not just about road closures. It’s about reimagining our urban spaces and fostering a culture where the health and safety of our children are prioritized. By reducing traffic around schools, we can decrease the risk of road accidents, improve air quality by reducing vehicle emissions, and encourage children to be more active by walking or cycling to school.
‘At GeoJunxion we strongly believe that geolocalized data can contribute to road safety, in particular for vulnerable pedestrians. School Streets are definitely one of those geofences which can be critical to save lives, reduce incidents and make our cities safer and more livable, in particular in areas with high density of pedestrians during certain hours of the day. We create advanced dynamic geofences for School Streets, and we keep them regularly updated to increase safety in those critical areas when properly utilized in navigation apps, fleet management systems, transport & logistics solutions and many other use cases’.
The Streets For Kids campaign is not limited to a week of action. Individuals and communities are encouraged to host their own Streets For Kids events at any time. The campaign provides a range of materials for download to help get started, and for further assistance visit the camping page.
The campaign is supported by a host of partner organizations, including Bike to School, BYCS, Cittadini per l’aria, Conbici, Ecologistas en Acción, and many more. These organizations, along with countless parents, teachers, and children, are the driving force behind the campaign, working tirelessly to create safer, cleaner, and more active streets for our children.
The Spring 2024 edition of Streets For Kids is more than a campaign; it’s a movement towards a safer, healthier, and more sustainable future for our children.
